Design engineer vs product designer: which are you?
Four questions about work that already left your hands. For people who design and build software, not physical parts. I'll name the seat you can prove today, and the one piece that would move you.

The difference
Both seats start in design. The line is what you hand over. A product designer hands over a design file or a prototype, and an engineer builds it. A design engineer hands over code that merges, so the interface they designed is the one that ships.
A frontend engineer hands over the same merged diff, but the work starts in engineering. The quadrant below the result shows all four cells.
Questions
What is the difference between a design engineer and a product designer?
What you hand over. A product designer hands over a design file or a prototype. A design engineer hands over code that merges into the product. Both start in design.
Is a design engineer the same as a frontend engineer?
They hand over the same thing, a merged diff. The start is different. A frontend engineer comes from engineering. A design engineer comes from design, and taste is the job.
Do product designers need to code?
No. Many product designer roles grade a portfolio and a design system, not code. A prototype in code helps. It does not make the seat a design engineer seat. A merged diff does.
How do I move from product designer to design engineer?
Get one change merged in a real repo a teammate can open. A focus state, a label, or a token is enough to start. That diff is the proof a design engineer posting asks for.
Is this about mechanical design engineers?
No. In mechanical engineering, a design engineer designs physical parts in CAD. This check is about software interfaces: the people who design and build the screens in an app.
